Creating engaging spaces

Experiences of working virtually

Event Details

Event Description

Where do virtual groups get their motivation from and how do they cope with the obstacles of little face-to-face communication? I will be sharing the experiences of ESTIEM, which is the student organisation for Industrial Engineering Students from Europe. Connecting some 5.000 students, ESTIEM offers events, seminars, workshops and trainings to its members.

The network is run and administrated by around 150 very active ESTIEMers on a "central" level. All ESTIEMers do their work completely voluntary and almost solely virtually.

We don't use FB as a work tool. It's a social thing, makes you feel "connected". But that's crucial for virtual work!

Really looking forward to hearing the experiences of so many students working together virtually! Would you do it again :-)?

wow, are you actually using Facebook as a collaborative work tool?

I talked to David today and he already gave me a little glimps into his session and mentioned that facebook has played a big role in how they connect to each other. I´m really looking forward to the session to find out more!

Hi Zoltan, we know AIESEC and are in close contact with them. Also other organisations like BEST, AEGEE etc. They might have different goals but the same kind of people working in it.

And I am sure they use the same tools and keys as we do.

Fascinating = what can we learn from a volunteer organisation working virtually! Learning from the younger generation!

Hi David, sounds rather interesting. Sometimes it is surprising that volunteers and students create something which would be a best case practice for the "adults" or "professionals".

Anyways, as we are all here we are open to learn and discover how ESTIEMers connect and work virtually. So I guess we are on the right track  :)

Have you heard about AIESEC? It also exists at universities and based on your description, their systems work in a similar way. They have a system to manage a global internship exchange program, connecting over 7000 internship opportunities wit the trainees over 100 countries. Pretty interesting.

Lee Jenner replied to Radical Inclusion's discussion How can we take the Engaging Spaces Concept further? in the group Engaging Spaces Walks
"I attended the walk in London but I'm sure the same questions apply. Insights Time and space for reflection is necessary.  Creative engagement often happens in moments outside the controlled environment, or on the edges, for…"
