How to nurture and cherish creativity of employees from the physical space design perspective?
Using game companies in Finland, Iceland and China etc. as example, we discuss how creative work can be managed with spatial design in both offline and online world.
This session is part of Offline and Online Workspaces track, done in collaboration with Holger Nauheimer. His session will follow mine, be sure to check it out as well: Designing Engaging Spaces for Virtual Collaboration. Of course, feel free to attend both or just either one of our sessions.

Comment by Tianyi Pan on May 20, 2011 at 10:46am Hi Inge, no I dont mind at all! In fact, I copied your style and embedded the Webex intro at the end as well. It's more "customer friendly" this way :)
I certainly hope you can attend and share your stories during the session on evoking the inner child and playfulness. I will show some examples, but I think it's the interaction between the attendees that's the real value here.
Comment by Inge Jansen on May 20, 2011 at 10:01am Hi Tianyi,
I added your video (great job!) to this introduction for more exposure, hope that's okay with you!
Your introduction makes me curious to reflect on physical (and virtual) spaces and to share experiences. I like your phrase of 'evoking the inner child', it would be great if participants of this session could think about an environment (or even bring pictures) that has this effect on them. I always feel this when I am swinging on a swing in a garden I pass, or when I'm walking through the dunes and can't stop myself from running or rolling down. Next question is: how can this be translated to a physical and virtual space? I need to think of that a bit more...
Comment by Tianyi Pan on May 18, 2011 at 9:46pm Zoltan, very nice point. Unfortunately the reason behind viral spreading of an idea is a bit offtopic. However, regarding the conditions surrounding the birth of these ideas, that might touch on my topic. Although I'm not an expert in this field, something that repeatedly comes up when people ask about the environmental aspects behind creativity, the answer has been playfulness. I guess what I mean is that the environment should evoke the inner child in the person in order for that person to become more creative and not be risk-avoiding.
Sari, yes, I think my and Holger's sessions greatly complement each other. Actually, this is why I've taken the "virtual" out from my own session. I will still briefly bring my own experience of virtual collaboration tools at the end of my session, and contrast that with the physical environment. However, it serves more as a teaser and a bridge to Holger's session, which will fully deal with virtual spaces.
Comment by Sari Stenfors on May 18, 2011 at 7:49pm Tianyi, now that you have a nice combo with Holger's session on virtual creative spaces, I was wondering if you will be comparing them at some point. I would like to learn about the differences of virtual and physical creative spaces. Is that a topic for some other session or will you cover that?
Comment by Zoltan Jaq Jakab on May 18, 2011 at 5:28pm In connection to angry birds and this topic I do have some things hitting my mind.
What makes an idea or a design spread globally like a virus? I mean we see funny, crozy or dramatic animations, pictures but only a few of them really pread. What are the features that makes something so viral?
Question following this. If we know what are these things, how can we cultivate these crative skills, these "heavenly sparks" to create more ideas like them?
Comment by Tianyi Pan on May 13, 2011 at 1:09pm Hi Hans,
Thanks for the comment. Please note that we collaborated with Holger to bring our thematically close sessions into a fully featured track, and thus changed the order of our presentations to make it flow better.
My session will now be held before the break.
Thanks,
Tianyi
